 Abstract:
»The chapter explores the issues of the historical past in modern Japanese–Taiwanese relations (in particular, the problem of “comfort women” and the challenges related to the issue of territorial sovereignty over the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands). Although these issues do not directly affect the development of the traditionally close relations between Tokyo and Taipei, they play an important role in the formation of the phenomenon of Taiwanese identity and can be attributed to the most pressing problems of the domestic and foreign policy of the Republic of China (Taiwan). In turn, the antagonism between the mainland and the island parts of China that has been going on for more than half a century, together with the current international situation, also affects the rethinking of the Taiwanese of their colonial past.
The assessment of Japanese colonial rule and of Japan’s actions during the Second World War, as a rule, is one of the aspects of the discussion in Taiwan about further ways of development of the Republic of China, of its status and prospects for strengthening ties with its closest neighbours and partners, and first of all with China, the United States and Japan. On the domestic political agenda, the problems of the historical past usually appear in the context of other issues related to national identity and the search for models for the further development of society and state in Taiwan.
Supporters of closer relations with the PRC (in particular, the Kuomintang) tend to focus on the negative manifestations of colonial rule, while supporters of independent Taiwan (e.g. the Democratic Progressive Party – DPP) usually point to the modernization of the island under Japanese control, contrasting it with the “white terror” of the Chinese authorities in the first years after the end of the war.«
